Brief & Concept Proposal

A brief for the design of a workplace of the future was set out by the Bath based Interior Design firm Interaction. The aim of the project was to develop an initial concept into a practical design to accommodate the evolution of the present workspace into that of the future.

In response to the brief, I decided that the subject of the development would be the commercial kitchen space. This was made in the knowledge that the current kitchen workspace has seen little development beyond technological advances in recent years. Studies have shown that a significant negative aspect of employment in a commercial kitchen is the stress inherently associated with this line of work.

That is the reason why I decided to make it my main objective to lower the stress levels in commercial kitchens. My design focuses on three sub-objectives which will enable it:

My concept is to spatially rearrange a restaurant so that the three main departments (restaurant, kitchen, admin) with it overlap. I am placing two main elements where the overlap occurs, which will improve the visual and verbal communication between the customers and the staff: customers will be able to give live feedback to chefs and 'back of house' which, according to research, is a main source of motivation for the staff to do what they are doing better and with more love, and the admin department will also have direct view of the kitchen and restaurant space.

Storyboard

As a part of the development of the project we were asked to produce a visual narrative of six to eight images, which explains the main concept of our design. There were no specific requirements to the way it was to be produced: both digital and hand drawn interpretations were accepted. I decided to completely hand draw my storyboard using ink and colour pencils. The first six images have only certain sections coloured in which aims to better the understading of the images by putting focus on the main elements within them. The last two images are fully coloured in because they show the restaurant after its transformation: no stress and happier staff.
